Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I receive a massage?
Depending on what condition your musculature system is in, and if you have chronic pain and stress, it is most beneficial to receive a massage at least twice a month to bring your body to a maximum pain-free condition, and to prevent future illness of the body and mind.
How can you make me comfortable with my first massage?
Many people are uncomfortable for their first or second massage, but with time and familiarity between client and therapist, you will settle comfortably into the new world of beneficial massages. I am a Professional Certified and Licensed Massage Therapist with a high standard of ethics. In massage school, a very intense program was conducted regarding a client's privacy. I am aware that massage is a very personal and private experience for most people. Draping of linens is one of the most important procedures in maintaining the personal/private integrity of the client/therapist relationship. If you are uncomfortable disrobing, you may choose to receive your massage with light / loose clothing on. The benefits are very similar to that of being bare skinned. I can still find sore muscles and relieve stress points with your clothes on as well. Bare skin, however, is beneficial because I can glide the muscles better, notice spots on the skin that may require
special attention, and I can feel the muscle spasms better. When disrobed, only the muscle that I am working on will be exposed, with the rest of your body being fully draped in linens. You will then have the confidence of total, personal privacy. I am dedicated to making you as comfortable as possible.

What is Swedish Massage?
Swedish Massage may be the most basic type of massage, but in most cases it is the most effective. It is generally used for relaxation and to help relieve tension. It is the start of most sessions and is the most widely used massage among therapists. There are five
basic strokes used in Swedish Massage: gliding, kneading, friction, percussion, and gentle rocking. These techniques are used on the more superficial layers of the muscles, combined with active and passive movements of the joints.
What is Deep Muscle/Connective Tissue Massage?
Deep Tissue Massage is used to release chronic patterns of muscular tension using slow strokes, direct pressure or friction. Often the movements are directed across the grain of the muscles (cross-fiber) using the fingers, thumbs or elbows. This is applied with greater pressure and at deeper layers of the muscle than Swedish Massage. It is also more specific. For example, in the case of someone with a sore shoulder, the practitioner may focus on the trapezius and the rhomboid underneath, trying to work in all the layers of muscle that might be involved. Deep Tissue Massage lends itself to being more focused on a problem area.
What is Trigger Point Therapy?
A trigger point (TP) is a hyperirritable tender spot in an abused muscle that refers pain ("triggers" pain) to other muscles. This is why the pain in your head may be coming from a neck muscle and the pain in your neck from a shoulder muscle. If the trigger points are not treated, they can be the culprits in lingering pain, even after an injury has healed, and the reason why the headache, neck ache and backache keep returning year after year. Some of the causes of TP activity in your muscles are: stress, excessive chilling, injury, overuse, strain, as well as chemical, drugs, alcohol, and environmental pollutants. Active trigger points keep the muscles tight, restricting blood flow and compressing nerves, perpetuating a vicious pain-spasm cycle in the muscles. The effect of decreased flexibility limits movement encouraging postural patterns which may sustain the cycle for years. Trigger Point Release Therapy is a valuable component of preventative, as well as rehabilitative care. Ischemic Compression refers to the technique of compressing a TP, so as to deprive it of blood flow for a time. This disrupts the local physiology and induces a reorganization of the TP area in a more normal manner. If the TP is eliminated by this procedure, it is said to have been “inactivated”.
